I think that what Cal is doing is decidedly not the right way to solve the issue. While his intentions were inherently good and heroic, the things he had to do (and the crimes he had to commit) in order to achieve what he wanted spoiled the commendable idea. Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but I don't really think that framing someone is a justifiable way to bring them to justice, and even though everything "turned out alright" in the end, the consequences Cal faced could have been prevented by rethinking his actions. Cal is incredibly empathetic and kind, and cares so much about those that cannot help themselves in escaping a harmful situation. But by doing what he did, he not only entered himself into extremely dangerous situations and criminal activity, he also defied the blatant wishes of those involved (i.e, Gretchen specifically asking him several times not to get any more involved). Though I think that I would have also denied these requests if I were in Cal's place, what he chose to do (framing Otto, breaking into their house, etc.) put Gretchen in even more danger. While I really admire his dedication and morality, I think he took everything a step (or several steps) too far, and made helping a person out of a horrible situation into a scenario where he was the ultimate savior. I think Cal had morally sound intentions and an impressive commitment, but he also wasn't afraid to gamble with the fates of those around him to achieve his goal, which causes serious problems even if the intentions are good.
