There has been a lot of talk around town surrounding our dear minister, Arthur Dimmesdale, and his horrible state of health. It is so fortunate that Mr. Chillingworth has come to Boston, because I fear that Dimmesdale would not be living without him! He does seem like quite a strange man, and so little is known of him and his past. I was wary of Chillingworth upon his first arrival in our town, but I think he has vastly proved his goodness and purity of heart with all the good work he has been doing.
I've also heard rumors about Dimmesdale, and a few ladies around town have been saying that his behavior has been quite strange as of late. Someone even saw him torturing himself with a whip a few days ago, and Hester's daughter saw him with the "Black Man", who I must think is the presence of the devil himself. I will admit that I fear for our poor minister's sanity, but we must have constant faith in disciples of the Lord that have chosen to teach his word. I worry that there is a presence of sin in our community, and there has been ever since Hester's child was born into adultery, and I fear that it may be affecting the townspeople. When our minister begins to be overcome with insanity and fits of poor heath, which many believe is the work of sin, there must be something amiss in our humble community.
