I personally can't believe all of the change that has occurred in our town since my family moved here a few years ago. I feel like many of the members of the Boston community are going to be reflecting on our minister's death, and how truly awful it was. I am completely astonished and shocked that he was Pearl's father all along, and that his sin was the same as Hester Prynne's. But while Hester was punished for years with the public display of her scarlet letter, Dimmesdale suffered his letter in private, and I feel that they both received a punishment that was much too severe. I believe that our community was much too harsh on Hester and a sin that was committed many years ago, and I hope that her new life brings more forgiveness, love, and prosperity than we offered as a community.
After the shocking events in our community, I've realized that I was originally blinded by Hester's severe condemnation and stigma of adultery, and that this made me view her as less of a person. I wish that our community could have a second chance in how we treated her, as I believe that many people (myself included) were so focused on enforcing strict religious and political beliefs that we forgot how to be kind and forgiving towards someone that desperately needed it. Even in all of her toil, Hester was still a hard worker and contributed to the community, and raised Pearl into a beautiful young lady. I only wish that Dimmesdale were still alive so that he and Hester could start the life that they were dreaming of, and in the same way, our community could start a new life of tolerance and forgiveness.
